Preparing for the Storms of Life

I was recently reminded of hurricane preparedness on my way home from a trip. It was a marquee sign on the interstate and I wondered why we were still seeing this message when the end of hurricane season was about to end.

In life, we don’t always know when a storm is going to hit us and we certainly will not have a marquee flashing a warning to be prepared for the oncoming of one. Though storms are inevitable, we can prepare for them, whether they are financial, emotional, physical or relational.

The first thing to understand is we will all face storms in life:

Sometimes God Says “No”

My sons invited some of their friends for a sleepover and they were laughing and wrestling when suddenly I heard the funniest yet profound thing. One of my sons kept asking his friend a question over and over and his friend kept saying “no.”

My son kept pestering him to point that the young boy turned to my son and asked, “Which part don’t you understand, the N or the O?”

We all began to laugh hysterically because of what he said and the way he said it – with clarity, certainty and humor.

Oh So Divine!

God speaks to us in many ways and oftentimes He does so through His Word. It is amazing how He uses His Word at the precise moment you need Him.

Then the word of the Lord came unto me saying, Jeremiah 1:4

One of those moments came through a fierce battle of courage I was going to have to fight. I didn’t know initially it was going to be a battle, but God did and He prepared me for it through His Word in the book of Jeremiah.

This battle was going to include two individuals with decision making authority. It was going to involve confrontation, which like most people, I avoid as much as possible.

God Can Fix Anything!

I am married to a wonderful man who can fix almost anything. He’s always inspecting our cars and our home to make sure everything is in working order and performs any maintenance as needed. And when he is not able to fix something, he calls on a professional.

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27

But as a single mother before marrying my awesome husband, there were several occasions where I needed help having something repaired. Thankfully, through some of the most difficult times in this part of my life, there was always a friend or family member to lend a helping hand whenever I needed repairs on my car or in my home.

Prayer – It’s Refreshing Like Water

A few years ago, I gave up my daily intake of sugary drinks and replaced them with more water. It wasn’t easy at first, but I knew the benefits of drinking water were going to have a positive impact on my health.

And surprisingly, the more I drank water, the more I thirsted for it.

A precious woman of God once told me prayer is the water that quenches our dry and thirsty soul. And we need both God’s Word and the “water” of prayer for spiritual survival and growth.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God… Psalm 42:2

Magnify the Lord With Me

I use coupons to save money on our grocery bill and as I was working on taking out all the expired coupons in my binder, I had trouble seeing the expiration dates. The print was too small or maybe the strength of my glasses needed to be adjusted!

I had to find the magnifying glass stored away in a junk drawer to help me see the fine print. I was able to finish organizing my coupon binder with the aid of that magnifying glass.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Psalm 34:3

It later occurred to me that I sometimes have a tendency to pull out a different kind of magnifying glass. You know the kind, it’s invisible, yet it can be a harmful tool when used improperly.

God Has Not Forgotten You

I was devastated. It was my 10th birthday and nobody remembered! My mom, who always made a big fuss over birthdays, forgot and left for work without saying a word.

It had been a busy morning. We had family visiting and as soon as they left, my mom had to rush out the door to work. I hadn’t said anything because I thought surely any minute the celebration would start.

But it didn’t happen. I was forgotten.
