I used to be so afraid of thunderstorms, not as a child, but as an adult! This fear lasted until I started serving the Lord.
One night, I was awakened by loud thunder and bright flashes of lightning. Instead of doing what I always did, hide under the blankets in fear, I walked to the living room and opened the curtains.
The rain poured down and the black sky lit up with each flash of lightning. The thunder boomed loudly, but instead of fear gripping my heart, the loud sound penetrated my soul with God’s assurance that He would be with me through the storm.
I also felt the assurance that He would be there with me and for me through all of life’s storms I would experience no matter how long they lasted or how severe they were.
For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm… Isaiah 25:4
I went back to bed and slept peacefully while the storm outside continued. The storm lasted through the night, but by morning, the sun was shining again and all was well in the outside world.
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Psalm 107:29
Not long after the thunderstorm, our church choir sang a song with the following lyrics:
I know the Master of the wind,
I know the Maker of the rain;
He can calm a storm, make the sun shine again
I know the Master of the wind.
When thunderstorms would try to grip me with fear, I would start singing this song until I felt calm. Mark 4:39 also provided great comfort because God can tell the storm what to do:
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
The storms of life can be fast moving, without leaving any real signs of damage. Other storms can be fierce, intense and leave behind chaos and destruction. God promises to be with us, calm us and give us peace to overcome each storm.
This is exactly what He did the night of the storm I experienced as a new believer. He didn’t calm the storm around me, but He did calm me and He has done this for every life storm I’ve ever experienced.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
I know the Maker of the Rain.
