For I am the Lord, I change not…Malachi 3:6
I took my two young sons on a grocery trip to one of those big box stores. That was a big mistake. Or so I thought at the time.
My younger son was two years old and he was sitting in the front seat of the grocery cart. We rounded a corner and came head on with a huge display of stuffed animals.
As soon as my younger son saw what it was, he immediately snatched one before I could move away from the display. This was the first time that he had ever grabbed anything while at the store but somehow I sensed his urgency to have it.
He knew he had to have this stuffed animal and he had to have it that very moment. I tried and tried to gently coax the animal out of his hands but to no avail.
He didn’t cry, he didn’t ask for the toy, he simply held onto it with all his might and refused to let go of this fluffy, soft toy.
I reluctantly agreed to let him keep his newfound treasure only because he rarely asked for anything at the store. He found great comfort in that stuffed toy and as a parent that made me happy.
That stuff animal could not talk, move or hug back. But that didn’t change what it could do – make my son feel secure and happy.
God allowed me to see this childlike faith to grab and hold onto something that would provide comfort and security.
And just like a child can hold firmly to a stuffed animal, we can hold onto God’s unchanging hand with all our might:
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast…Hebrews 6:19
He loves us and cares about everything that happens to us. He will not change and He assures us that neither will His Word:
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Isaiah 40:8
We can have confidence in Who He is and in His unchanging characteristics:
Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Hold onto His unchanging Hand!
